UNDP to honour winners of 2020 Equator Prize Award on 29
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will on 29th of this month honour winners of this year’s Equator Prize Award. The ten outstanding winners emerged from Indigenous and local groups from across the world.
Each winner showcases innovative, nature-based solutions for tackling biodiversity, climate change, and poverty challenges. The event highlights concrete responses and practical solutions to the environmental crisis from Indigenous peoples and local communities all over the world.
This year’s winners include groups based in Canada, Myanmar, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ecuador, Guatemala, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mexico, and Thailand.
During the pandemic, calls for green recovery have been loud and clear, and the world is hungry for nature-based solutions. The ten winners of the Equator Prize 2020 provide blueprints for addressing the socioeconomic crisis caused by COVID-19 at the local level with green approaches.
The Equator Prize Award Ceremony will take place virtually on 29 September 2020, 9:00 a.m. EDT. It is part of a series of virtual events called the “Nature for Life Hub,” happening on Sept 24-25 and 28-29th.
The virtual ceremony will feature remarks by decision-makers, celebrities, and the winners themselves, along with videos and music. The event will make a powerful case that local action on the three categories of the Prize: “Nature for Climate,” “Nature for Water,” and “Nature for Prosperity” offers a powerful response to our planetary emergency.
