Meteorologists and climate scientists at the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), are undergoing training on improved NextGen approach for seasonal and sub-seasonal forecasting.

The training which commenced on Monday, August 19, 2024, is being conducted by the “Building Agricultural Systems Resilience in Nigeria Project”.

The specialized training is designed to enhance the capacity of NiMet meteorologists and climate scientists, by equipping them with cutting-edge forecasting tools and techniques. The goal is to improve the accuracy of seasonal and sub-seasonal forecasts, which play a critical role in climate risk management and adaptation, particularly within agriculture and other vulnerable sectors.

The training is of great significance as it directly impacts farmers’ ability to make informed decisions about their farming activities. With access to more reliable forecasts, farmers can better plan essential agricultural operations. Accurate forecasting enables them to anticipate and mitigate the risks posed by extreme weather events, which can severely affect crop and livestock production.
