Nigeria, other LDCs meet in Abuja on implementation of SDGs
No fewer than 16 countries have converged in Abuja to brainstorm on the best methods for the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
The 16 Less Developed Nations (LDCs) started their activity on the platform of a learning conference on “Holistic Approaches for the Implementation Of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals”.
The SDG initiative was endorsed by world leaders under the auspices of the United Nations in New York in September 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the the two-day Abuja conference is organized by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).
It is designed to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and experiences in the course of the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Less Developed Countries.
Sustainable Development Goals, an off-shoot of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is a global programme with a seventeen point agenda designed to uplift the quality of life of humans the world over.
The 17 point agenda of the SDGs include end poverty in all its forms everywhere; end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.
They also include ensuring healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages as well as ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promote life-long learning opportunities for all.
Achieving gender equality and empower all women and girls; availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all; and access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all are included in the agenda.
The participating countries are Uganda, Gambia, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Malawi, Lesotho, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Somalia.
Others are Angola, Zambia, Sudan, South Sudan, and Rwanda.
They would examine the National review process with a presentation from Uganda, mainstreaming SDG Agenda for sustainable development.
Other issues to be discussed at the conference include coordination mechanisms, processes and practices towards an integrated approach for the implementation of Agenda 2030.
They will also discuss partnership framework issues, country presentations from Uganda and Zambia.
